Facebook...now what is this all about?
The name has been around for a while now along with other social sites such as MySpace and Bebo.
Just to give you an idea about how fast this stuff is moving Facebook is now SIX years old!
Yep...six years old.
Facebook was dreamed up by a guy named Mark Zuckerberg and some of his friends in a Harvard Dorm and has grown to be one of the most influential companies in the world.
Why would I think that Facebook could be an influential force?
Surely it's just a social site that kid's hang out on and get to keep in touch or hassle other kids?
Uhh...NO!
Very early on Facebook was recognized in the Internet money making revolution as a great and free way to prospect for their business. The business aspect and the opportunities available have been massive for some time now.
Because there are almost half a billion Facebook users now and because most astute marketers know that Facebook does indeed produce results any half decent Internet marketing program will have some level of training in how to leverage Facebook.
Because of the intensity of prospecting going on the powers that be have put into place a multitude of safeguards to stop spamming, automated software, bad behavior, or unrealistic advertising particularly in the Internet based home business category.
For this I salute them for their tenacity and for the efficacy of their actions.
Apart from a few annoying applications glitches (pillow fight anyone?) they have built this platform into a formidable force.
Now FB are well into launching a brand new reinvention which involves business pages, like buttons and Facebook Pay Per Click! This will revolutionize online marketing and I am serious about this.
This is a major challenge to the traditional (traditional is a funny word to choose - how old is search engine marketing?) way to market on the Internet.
Even Google is scared about the potential of this idea!
Facebook sees a world where people do not even have to type in a search term- all that they would be interested in is presented for them based on what they have already indicated they are interested in and then running it through a complex algorithm which sucks in what thousands of similar or like-minded people like and...voila!
Results - Facebook looks at a reported billion dollar revenue for this year! It has become free cash flow positive meaning that it has more than enough profits to fund all its development and capital investment needs...nice!
Kid's networking - I don't think so.
Meanwhile MySpace is in serious trouble - co-chief Jason Hirschhorn jumping ship after 4 months (Ironically confirming his departure on Twitter!!), staff cuts of almost 30%, losses of hundreds of millions...the figures are astonishing!
May 2010 - MySpace 4% drop in US visitors, Facebook 85% growth according to comScore ...what?
And Bebo has sold for less than $10 million by AOL after being bought for ...wait for it...
$850 million TWO years ago...phew! And we think we know stress!
2010: this is how it plays if you are in the Internet money making game.
Google is still the king and will be for some time yet...
Make sure though that you have one eye on where the world of marketing is heading and have no doubt there will be a major counter-strike from the Google machine.
This will be fascinating!
Be sure you are absolutely trained in the elements of keyword research, search engine optimization, and organic search domination because whatever happens in this battle these skills will serve you well.
